While the word “Nemesis” often comes with negative connotations, we prefer the definitions that describe a nemesis as one who inflicts retribution or justice. Indeed, the history of the word is from the Ancient Greek “némesis” and “némein”, which translate to a divine retribution or to give what is due. The ancient Greek goddess Nemesis was revered and feared as a goddess of justice. She was often depicted with swords and scales, not unlike the goddess Justitia, who’s likeness graces our courtrooms today. Some Greek myths even state Nemesis herself was a victim of sexual assault at the hands of Zeus. She is undoubtedly a fitting symbol for our work in helping bring justice to sexual assault survivors. We hope to be the nemeses of those perpetrators who have so far eluded their consequences and a symbol of strength and hope to those survivors who are still waiting for justice.
